Types of Operating Windows
The majority of operable windows slide either horizontally or vertically; alternatively, casement and awning windows (both of which are hinged) swing out.
Horizontal sliding windows are a common style that is very easy to use. The sash slides either to the left or right, depending on where you wish to direct the air flow in the room. If you are considering larger window sizes, sliders are a good option.
With an awning window, the sash is hinged at the top and swings upward. This allows air to flow into the home with side to side ventilation, while also helping to keep the rain out. This style of window tends to be smaller in size and is often wider than it is tall.
Casement windows have a hinge on one side and open outward by rotating a crank style handle. Because they open like a door, they allow the maximum amount of ventilation into the home where airflow is desired. They offer an unobstructed view, because there is no rail in the center.
For single hung windows, the bottom sash slides up and down to open and close the window. The top sash stays in place and allows light to enter the home, but not air flow. Because they open vertically, they save space when the house exterior faces a patio or walking path.
Projection Windows
Instead of being installed in line with the perimeter of a structure, certain specialty windows project out beyond the plane of the exterior wall.
Garden Windows
Garden windows, most often installed in kitchens, have the effect of making a room seem larger, particularly when countertop material is run out into the base of the unit. These windows come with a glass roof, side venting panels, and a shelf for plants or knick-knacks.
Bay/Bow Windows
Unlike Garden Windows which project out at 90 degrees, Bay and Bow Windows are angled. A Bay will normally have a center Picture Window and two Casement or Vertical Sliding “Flankers.” Bow Windows, generally used in very wide openings, are made up of four or more separate panels and don’t extend out as far from the exterior wall.

Most windows are square or rectangular, but arched, triangular, trapezoidal and other geometric configurations are available as well.
